What is IP PBX?

An IP PBX is a kind of Private-Branch-Exchange that leverages your existing computer networks to provide enriched PBX features, high scalability and potentially reduce your recurrent call charges.

It usually consists of a set of desk phones (IP or analogue), an IP PBX server and optionally some VOIP gateways connected by computer networks instead of traditional telephone lines.

IP PBX could be a good substitute of traditional PBX due to better price-performance.

How does IP PBX work?

To most users, IP PBX works just as traditional one. The handset operations and dial sequence are not much different while there are more call features available. IP PBX interfaces with your telephone company’s T1/E1/CO lines just like traditional PBX and at the same time integrates with your computer networks. Conversation is then digitized and transmitted in your company LAN. Outbound calls can be transmitted eventually to your local telephone company or over the Internet to remote destinations.
